Graphene, graphite, and diamond are all forms of carbon atoms and belong to different allotropes of carbon. Graphene is a material made of a single layer of carbon atoms, while graphite and diamond are formed by carbon atoms arranged in specific patterns.

ToggleLet’s start with an example many people are familiar with: the 2B pencil (made of graphite). When you write on paper, you may leave behind single or multiple layers of graphene. In industrial applications, any carbon structure consisting of up to 10 layers of atoms is referred to as graphene. Single-layer graphene is quite expensive and is mainly used in aerospace and military industries. Graphene with 2-4 layers can be used for civilian purposes, costing just a few dollars per gram.
Graphene is the thinnest material in the world. In fact, it would take 200,000 single layers of graphene to equal the thickness of a human hair. Despite its thinness, graphene is 200 times stronger than steel and is currently the most electrically and thermally conductive material discovered.
Graphene is revolutionary and has significant potential for a wide range of applications. Its raw materials are also abundant. Many users are curious about graphene heating systems, and some might think graphene heating is a concept similar to earlier nanomaterials. However, graphene is already a widely recognized material in the industry. In 2014, the country’s leadership visited factories to inspect the graphene industry and urged companies to expand this field.
On July 24, 2017, at the “Graphene Standards and Patent Seminar” held in Beijing, the first product standard for graphene materials used in building heating was officially released. This standard, drafted by the China Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, is titled “Graphene Material Printing Ink for Infrared Radiation Electric Heating Film”. The release of this standard is a milestone in the development of healthy applications for graphene in the electric heating sector. This also marks the first product standard for graphene applications in building heating.
As the national “Coal to Electricity” strategy continues to be implemented, replacing traditional water-based heating with graphene-based floor heating is only a matter of time. Graphene heating systems outperform traditional water-based heating in several ways, including energy efficiency, environmental protection, ease of installation and maintenance, and safety. As people become more familiar with graphene heating, the number of users adopting it will continue to grow.
Graphene floor heating is no longer just a conceptual product. It has already been widely applied in the building heating market. Even Alibaba’s cloud computing center uses graphene floor heating. Compared to other floor heating systems like cable and carbon crystal heating, graphene floor heating heats up much faster. Additionally, graphene floor heating is highly stable. In a national-level laboratory test conducted in Wuhan, the system underwent an aging test at 1.35 times the rated power for 8 months. The conclusion was that graphene floor heating has a lifespan of over 300,000 hours, with less than 10% thermal decay, demonstrating its incredible stability.
In graphene heating films, approximately 6 kg of graphene is used for every 100 kg of material. Graphene is categorized into two types: conductive graphene and thermally conductive graphene. The rapid rise in room temperature is due to the high electrical-to-thermal energy conversion rate of graphene floor heating (over 99%). This heating method relies on far-infrared radiation, which is quite different from the heating methods used by air conditioners or traditional water-based heating. Far-infrared radiation is similar to the warmth you feel when you bask in the sun, which is why people find it more comfortable and healthier. It also offers excellent health benefits due to the far-infrared radiation.
When a 5V power supply is connected to a piece of graphene heating fabric, it heats up in less than 10 seconds, demonstrating the remarkable technology behind graphene heating. After experiencing a room heated by graphene, it’s clear that it’s not just a conceptual product. The floor heats up quickly, and the warmth feels very comfortable. Far-infrared radiation from graphene heating can even be detected using handheld devices.
For residential apartments with insufficient ceiling height, graphene floor heating is a fantastic choice for users who want to install heating without the need for a boiler, piping, or taking up ceiling space. This system is also maintenance-free and more convenient compared to traditional heating systems.
Graphene is an extraordinary material with revolutionary potential. Graphene-based heating systems offer significant advantages over traditional methods in terms of speed, comfort, energy efficiency, and sustainability. With its wide range of applications, graphene is no longer just a theoretical concept, but a practical technology that is already being implemented in real-world scenarios. As public awareness of graphene heating grows, it is expected to become an increasingly popular choice for building heating systems.
